Charles Muntz

Charles Muntz is the fallen hero turned antagonist of Pixar’s Up (2009), serving as both Carl Fredricksen’s childhood idol and his ultimate nemesis. Once a celebrated explorer and aviator, Muntz became obsessed with capturing a rare colourful bird in South America to restore his tarnished reputation after being accused of fabricating evidence of the creature’s existence.

Decades of isolation in the Venezuelan wilderness have transformed Muntz from an inspiring adventurer into a paranoid and ruthless villain. When Carl and Russell encounter him during their balloon house journey, they discover that their childhood hero has become consumed by his quest for vindication, willing to eliminate anyone who threatens his mission to capture the bird he calls ‘the Monster of Paradise Falls’.
