About Sadness

Sadness is one of the five core emotions living inside the mind of 11-year-old Riley Andersen in Pixar’s groundbreaking 2015 film Inside Out. Voiced with tender melancholy by Phyllis Smith, Sadness appears as a small, blue figure who embodies the natural human experience of sorrow and emotional processing. Unlike her more energetic counterparts Joy, Anger, Fear, and Disgust, Sadness moves slowly and thoughtfully through Riley’s mental headquarters, often leaving a blue trail in her wake that transforms happy memories into sad ones.

Initially viewed as problematic by the other emotions—particularly Joy, who desperately tries to keep Sadness contained—she proves to be essential to Riley’s emotional wellbeing. Throughout the film’s journey, Sadness demonstrates an intuitive understanding of empathy and the healing power of acknowledging difficult emotions. Her gentle, compassionate nature allows her to connect with others who are struggling, offering comfort rather than false cheerfulness.

The character’s arc serves as the emotional heart of Inside Out, illustrating Pixar’s sophisticated message about the importance of all emotions in a healthy mind. Sadness’s ultimate triumph comes when she learns that her role isn’t to be suppressed or hidden away, but to help Riley process change, loss, and growth. Her ability to reach out to others in distress and provide genuine comfort proves invaluable when Riley faces the challenges of moving to a new city and leaving her childhood behind.

Sadness returned alongside the other emotions in Inside Out 2 (2024), where her wisdom and emotional intelligence continue to play crucial roles in Riley’s teenage years, cementing her status as one of Pixar’s most psychologically astute character creations.
