Bing Bong

About Bing Bong

Bing Bong is Riley’s beloved imaginary friend from Pixar’s Inside Out (2015), a whimsical creature made from the boundless creativity of a child’s mind. Part elephant, part cat, and part dolphin, with a body composed of cotton candy, Bing Bong represents the pure joy and unbridled imagination of Riley’s younger years. His distinctive appearance includes a trunk, cat-like whiskers, and flippers, whilst his pink cotton candy exterior literally dissolves when he cries—a poignant metaphor for the fragility of childhood memories.

When Joy and Sadness find themselves lost in the depths of Riley’s mind, they encounter Bing Bong in the maze-like corridors of Long Term Memory. Though initially suspicious, he quickly becomes their enthusiastic guide, desperate to help Riley whilst harbouring his own dream of taking her to the moon in his song-powered rocket wagon. His childlike optimism and unwavering loyalty to Riley shine through even as he begins to fade from her memory, literally becoming more transparent as she grows older and moves beyond imaginary friends.

Bing Bong’s ultimate sacrifice—throwing himself from the rocket wagon so Joy can escape the Memory Dump and return to Headquarters—represents one of Pixar’s most emotionally devastating moments. As he fades away, asking Joy to take Riley to the moon for him, he embodies the bittersweet nature of growing up and leaving childhood behind. His character serves as a touching reminder that whilst we may forget our imaginary friends, the joy and wonder they brought to our lives remain part of who we become.

Voiced with perfect childlike enthusiasm by Richard Kind, Bing Bong has become an iconic representation of the magic of childhood imagination and the inevitable sadness of outgrowing it, making him one of Pixar’s most memorable supporting characters despite his brief screen time.
