About Joy

Joy is the eternally optimistic and energetic emotion who serves as the unofficial leader of the five core emotions living inside 11-year-old Riley’s mind in Pixar’s Inside Out (2015). As Riley’s dominant emotion, Joy has spent years working tirelessly to keep her human happy, orchestrating countless golden memories and maintaining an unwavering belief that every day should be filled with sunshine and smiles. With her bright yellow glow, spiky blue hair, and infectious enthusiasm, Joy embodies pure positivity and boundless energy.

Voiced by Amy Poehler, Joy initially struggles to understand the value of her fellow emotions, particularly Sadness, whom she views as a hindrance to Riley’s happiness. Her well-intentioned but controlling nature leads to conflict within Riley’s emotional headquarters, especially when the family moves from Minnesota to San Francisco. Joy’s journey throughout the film becomes one of learning that all emotions serve important purposes in creating a full, healthy emotional life.

Joy’s character development reaches its peak when she discovers that some of Riley’s most cherished core memories are actually bittersweet moments where joy and sadness intertwined. This revelation transforms her understanding of emotional complexity and teaches her that trying to maintain constant happiness can actually be harmful. By the film’s end, Joy learns to work collaboratively with all emotions, recognising that each feeling contributes to Riley’s growth and well-being.

Joy returned in Inside Out 2 (2024), now navigating the challenges of Riley’s adolescence and the arrival of new emotions like Anxiety. Her role evolves as she learns to adapt to Riley’s changing emotional landscape whilst maintaining her core optimistic spirit.
