Captain Panaka

Captain Quarsh Panaka serves as head of security for Queen Padmé Amidala on the peaceful planet of Naboo, where his military background and tactical expertise prove invaluable during the Trade Federation’s blockade and invasion. A veteran of previous conflicts, he brings a pragmatic, often cautious approach to protecting the young monarch, frequently clashing with the optimistic Jedi Knights Qui-Gon Jinn and Obi-Wan Kenobi over strategy and security protocols.

During the crisis on Naboo, Panaka coordinates the queen’s escape from Theed Palace and accompanies her delegation to Coruscant, where they seek aid from the Galactic Senate. His scepticism towards the Jedi’s methods creates tension throughout their mission, as he prioritises immediate safety over their more philosophical approach to resolving the conflict. Despite these differences, he proves instrumental in the successful liberation of Naboo from Trade Federation control.

Portrayed by British actor Hugh Quarshie, the character brings gravitas and military bearing to his role as the queen’s protector. Panaka’s distinctive uniform, complete with ceremonial elements befitting Naboo’s elegant aesthetic, reflects both his formal position within the royal court and his practical military function. His weathered appearance and stern demeanour suggest years of experience in conflicts across the galaxy.

Following the events on Naboo, Panaka continued serving the Royal House before eventually joining the Republic Special Task Force. His career ultimately led him into service with the Galactic Empire, where he met his end during a mission on the planet Onoam in 3 BBY, three years before the Battle of Yavin.
