HBO has released the first trailer for its Harry Potter TV series, and confirmed a Christmas 2026 premiere — earlier than the early 2027 window the network had previously indicated. After months of cast announcements and a single first-look image, there’s now a proper look at what the show is going to be.
What we know
The trailer opens at 4 Privet Drive. Harry is living under the stairs, enduring Aunt Petunia’s haircuts and Dudley’s bullying, until a letter arrives addressed to the cupboard under the stairs. Hagrid shows up — meeting Harry on the London Underground in a detail that departs from the films — and the wizarding world follows.
The first season is officially titled Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, will run to eight episodes, and is confirmed for a Christmas 2026 debut on HBO.
The three leads are all newcomers: Dominic McLaughlin as Harry, chosen from over 32,000 auditions; Arabella Stanton as Hermione; and Alastair Stout as Ron. The adult cast brings more immediate recognition — John Lithgow as Dumbledore, Paapa Essiedu as Snape, Nick Frost as Hagrid, and Janet McTeer as McGonagall. Paul Whitehouse plays Argus Filch and Luke Thallon takes on Quirinus Quirrell. Warwick Davis is the one returning face from the original films, reprising his role as Filius Flitwick.
Behind the camera, showrunner Francesca Gardiner comes from Succession. Director Mark Mylod — also Succession, also Game of Thrones — handles multiple episodes. Hans Zimmer is composing the score. The series is filmed at Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden, the same site as the original films. Seven seasons are planned, one book each, with J.K. Rowling serving as executive producer.
What comes next
The series arrives on HBO sometime over Christmas 2026 — a window that brings it a year ahead of where most people were expecting it. More trailers and cast detail will follow as the premiere approaches.
HBO have also timed the trailer to coincide with the UK and Ireland launch of HBO Max, which happens tomorrow, 26 March.
