Spider-Man: Brand New Day post-credits scene explained, and where it leaves Doomsday and Secret Wars

Spider-Man: Brand New Day has one credits scene and it plays right at the very end, after the full crawl, rather than in the mid-credits slot audiences have been trained to wait for. There are no actors in it. The scene is a screen: Ned Leeds’ homemade Spidey Tracker app, which registers a Spider-Man sighting, loses its fix, then zooms outward from Queens to New York to the United States to Earth and on past the Moon before settling somewhere in deep space. A title card reads Spider-Man Will Return.

That’s everything Marvel has shown. What follows separates what’s confirmed from what’s being extrapolated, because on this question the two have been getting mixed together.

What happens in the scene, beat by beat

Ned’s tracker is set up earlier in the film as a home-built tool for pinpointing Peter around Queens, which is what makes it useful here. The audience already knows what a normal reading looks like.

1. The tracker is live, showing an eight-bit style map view.
2. A prompt appears reading New Spider-Man sighting. Location unknown.
3. The display glitches and buffers.
4. The map zooms outward in stages: Queens, then New York, then the United States, then Earth, then past the orbit of the Moon.
5. A final prompt reads Location found, with the marker resting in open space.
6. The card Spider-Man Will Return closes the film.

No dialogue, no faces, no ship, no Doom. The whole thing is a user interface.

One detail is doing more work than any other, and it’s worth being precise about it. Does the tracker lose Peter’s existing signal and follow it into space, or does it pick up a second, separate Spider-signature while the original stays put? Descriptions of the scene differ, and almost every reading of what it sets up depends on which of those happened.

Avengers: Doomsday is confirmed. Spider-Man’s place in it is not

Marvel has confirmed a lot about Avengers: Doomsday, which arrives on 18 December 2026, directed by Joe and Anthony Russo from a script by Stephen McFeely. The official logline describes heroes from three distinct universes on a collision course against an existential threat.

The confirmed cast is unusually large. Robert Downey Jr as Doctor Doom, Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Sebastian Stan, Anthony Mackie, Florence Pugh, Tom Hiddleston, Wyatt Russell, Simu Liu, Channing Tatum, David Harbour, Letitia Wright, Kelsey Grammer, Winston Duke and Danny Ramirez, alongside the Fantastic Four contingent from First Steps (Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, Joseph Quinn) and a Fox-era X-Men contingent including Ian McKellen, Patrick Stewart, James Marsden and Rebecca Romijn.

Tom Holland is not on that list.

That’s the most important piece of context for reading this scene. Doomsday is roughly four months away with a fully announced roster, and Spider-Man isn’t part of it. Marvel has withheld surprise casting before, so the absence proves nothing on its own. It does mean a scene widely described as setting up Doomsday is setting up a film Spider-Man hasn’t been confirmed to appear in.

Footage shown at San Diego Comic-Con in 2026 gave a sense of the register: Doom on a throne in a rune-marked room, Sue Storm describing him as someone who was once kind before loss changed him, Doom blocking Stormbreaker one-handed, and a line accusing the assembled heroes of living stolen lives.

Almost nothing has been confirmed about Secret Wars

The follow-up is Avengers: Secret Wars, dated 17 December 2027, with the Russos returning. Downey is the only cast member Marvel currently lists for it. Kevin Feige has publicly denied that the film will be split in two.

Beyond that, Marvel has said nothing about the plot. Every description in circulation of Battleworld, incursions or a God Emperor Doom comes from the comics and from Doomsday’s marketing rather than from anything said about this film.

One bit of housekeeping, since the question keeps coming up: there’s no Avengers: Beyond. The two films are Doomsday and Secret Wars. The closest thing in Marvel’s own history is Beyond!, a 1985 comics miniseries connected to the original Secret Wars, and it’s unrelated to either.

Two different comics carry the Secret Wars name

Secret Wars (1984), written by Jim Shooter, has a god-like being called the Beyonder transport Marvel’s heroes and villains to a patchwork planet named Battleworld to fight for his own purposes. This is where Spider-Man’s black costume first appears, picked up as a suit-repairing substance that later turns out to be a living symbiote. Venom exists because of it.

Secret Wars (2015), written by Jonathan Hickman, is far larger. The multiverse is collapsing through incursions, catastrophic collisions between parallel Earths that destroy both on contact. Doctor Doom takes the power holding it together, salvages fragments of dying universes, fuses them into a new Battleworld and rules it as God Emperor Doom. Reality is rebuilt at the end.

Doomsday’s confirmed material tracks the 2015 version far more closely than the 1984 one. Three universes, a collision course, Doom on a throne and a line about stolen lives all point at Hickman.

On the film’s own title: the comics Brand New Day era followed One More Day, in which Peter accepts a bargain with the demon Mephisto that erases his marriage to Mary Jane from existence in exchange for saving Aunt May. The film borrows the shape of that story, a reset world where people don’t remember what they should, without the demon.

The four readings, ranked by how much supports them

1. Peter has been pulled off Earth, and it points at Secret Wars. The most widely held reading. Deep space plus Battleworld plus the black suit originating in a Secret Wars story is a clean fit, and it explains why Holland is absent from Doomsday’s cast: he’s being saved for the film after. The evidence is genre-matching rather than anything confirmed, but it’s coherent and it fits the release schedule.

2. The tracker found a second Spider-Man rather than following the first. Argued by ComicBookMovie, whose case rests on close reading of the graphic: the original Earth-side signal isn’t lost, a new one is acquired, and the star field behind the zoom doesn’t change the way real interstellar distance would require. If that’s right, the scene is about a variant arriving rather than Holland leaving, which connects it to the circulating and unconfirmed claim that Doomsday opens with Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man. It’s the most rigorous reading of what’s on screen, and it depends on an unverified leak for its payoff.

3. Spider-Man is travelling with the Fantastic Four. Floated by TheWrap. The Fantastic Four have a spacecraft and an established off-world presence after First Steps, and they’re confirmed for Doomsday, which would give Peter a route into a film he isn’t billed for. Thinner than the first two, but it might still have merit.

Whether Doom wins in Doomsday is the question underneath all of this

The reason the Secret Wars reading feels natural is that it assumes an outcome for Doomsday. Doom takes control, and the 2027 film plays out on the Battleworld he builds from what’s left.

That’s a reasonable inference from the comics and the marketing, and it’s still an inference. If Doomsday ends with Doom defeated and the multiverse stabilised, a deep-space Spider-Man sighting in a 2026 film has no obvious Battleworld to point at, and reading two starts looking a lot better.

Our read: the tracker acquired a signal, it didn’t follow one

The honest position is that the scene doesn’t support a confident answer yet, and the two facts getting least attention are the ones that matter most. Holland isn’t on Doomsday’s cast list, and Marvel has said nothing whatsoever about the plot of Secret Wars.

Working from what’s on screen, the reading we’d put money on is that the tracker picked up a signal rather than followed one. That’s the detail the scene is built around, and it’s why the app is Ned’s rather than an official-looking Damage Control display. The audience needed a device whose normal behaviour they’d already seen, so the abnormal reading would register. If the intended message were that Peter is in space, a shot of Peter in space would have done it in less time.

There’s also a thread running through this film with a better claim on the wider story than the space imagery has, and it’s Damage Control. The organisation drives Jean Grey’s motivation, holds and experiments on her sister, and is the institution Peter works around for most of the runtime. The universal inhibitor technology developed against the Hulk is left conspicuously on the table. An MCU heading towards mutants and towards a fight over who gets to control extraordinary people has firmer connective tissue there than in a zoom-out past the Moon.

December settles most of this

18 December 2026 does the heavy lifting. If Holland appears in Doomsday, reading one weakens and readings two and three look stronger. If Doomsday opens on Tobey Maguire, reading two is confirmed. If Spider-Man is absent entirely, the scene belongs to Secret Wars and we wait another year.

Before then, the final Doomsday trailer, historically four to eight weeks out and so likely from late October, is the realistic point at which casting either leaks or gets confirmed. Anything Marvel says officially about Secret Wars would move things considerably, since right now there’s nothing to move.
