A moisture farmer on the desert planet Tatooine, Owen Lars served as Luke Skywalker’s uncle and guardian for nineteen crucial years. The stepson of Anakin Skywalker’s mother Shmi, he inherited the family homestead after his father Cliegg’s death and transformed it into a working moisture farm with his wife Beru. Though connected to the Skywalker lineage through marriage rather than blood, he proved fiercely protective of the family legacy—particularly when it came to shielding young Luke from the dangerous truth of his heritage.
When Obi-Wan Kenobi arrived on Tatooine carrying the infant Luke following the fall of the Republic, Owen reluctantly agreed to raise the boy as his own nephew. He spent the following years deflecting the former Jedi’s attempts to involve Luke in lightsabre training or tales of the Force, believing that a simple farmer’s life would keep the boy safe from the Empire’s reach. This protective instinct created ongoing tension with Kenobi, who remained nearby as the hermit Ben Kenobi.
As Luke matured, Owen found himself caught between his nephew’s restless ambitions and his own desire to maintain their quiet existence. The young man’s eagerness to join the Imperial Academy and see the galaxy beyond Tatooine’s twin suns frustrated the practical farmer, who needed help with the upcoming harvest. Tragically, Imperial stormtroopers discovered Owen and Beru’s connection to the stolen Death Star plans, leading to their deaths and ultimately pushing Luke towards his destiny as a Rebel hero.
