Argus Filch

Argus Filch serves as the caretaker of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, prowling the castle corridors with his feline companion, Mrs Norris. Born a Squib—someone from a magical family who cannot perform magic—he harbours deep resentment towards the students whose abilities he will never possess. His grey hair and pale complexion match his perpetually sour demeanour as he patrols the school grounds, always eager to catch rule-breakers and hand out punishments.

The caretaker’s office, filled with chains and various disciplinary devices, reflects his longing for the days when physical punishment was permitted at Hogwarts. Filch takes particular pleasure in confiscating forbidden items from students, storing them in his office like trophies. Mrs Norris acts as his eyes and ears throughout the castle, alerting him to any mischief with an almost supernatural awareness that makes students wonder if the cat possesses magical abilities her master lacks.

During Dolores Umbridge’s tenure as High Inquisitor, Filch briefly experienced newfound authority as a member of the Inquisitorial Squad, relishing the opportunity to exercise greater control over students. However, his loyalty ultimately remained with Hogwarts itself rather than any particular regime. Despite his harsh methods and bitter disposition, he demonstrates genuine dedication to maintaining the ancient castle.

David Bradley’s portrayal brings a complex mix of menace and pathos to the character, revealing glimpses of vulnerability beneath the gruff exterior. Students may fear his detention slips and late-night patrols, but Filch represents the complicated position of those who exist on the margins of the wizarding world.
