Tom Riddle presents himself as the perfect student at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry during the 1940s, earning top marks whilst concealing a darkness that would eventually reshape the wizarding world. Born to a witch mother who died shortly after his birth and a Muggle father who abandoned the family, this Half-blood Slytherin grows up in a London orphanage, displaying disturbing behaviour that hints at his magical abilities long before receiving his Hogwarts letter.

At school, the young wizard cultivates a carefully crafted image of academic excellence and charm, becoming a prefect and Head Boy whilst secretly researching the darkest forms of magic. His professors, particularly Horace Slughorn, view him as exceptionally talented, though Albus Dumbledore harbours suspicions about the student’s true nature. During this period, Riddle opens the Chamber of Secrets, unleashing a basilisk that petrifies several students and kills one.

The ambitious Slytherin’s quest for immortality leads him to create his first Horcrux whilst still at Hogwarts, splitting his soul through murder. He manipulates fellow students and teachers alike, gathering information about blood purity and ancient magic that will later inform his transformation into Lord Voldemort. His ability to appear trustworthy whilst harbouring murderous intentions makes him particularly dangerous, as he leaves behind a legacy of manipulation and death even before completing his education.

Portrayed by Christian Coulson in the film adaptation, this version of the character appears as a memory preserved in an enchanted diary, demonstrating the calculating intelligence that would make him the wizarding world’s most feared Dark wizard.
