Alecto Carrow represents one of the darker chapters in Hogwarts’ history, serving as a Death Eater who infiltrated the school during Voldemort’s rise to power. Born into the pure-blood Carrow family, she attended Hogwarts as a Slytherin student before embracing the Dark Arts and joining Voldemort’s inner circle alongside her brother Amycus.
During the 1997-1998 school year, Carrow accepted the position of Muggle Studies professor at Hogwarts, though her appointment came through Voldemort’s influence rather than educational merit. Her curriculum bore little resemblance to traditional Muggle Studies, instead promoting the twisted ideology that Muggles were subhuman and deserving of wizarding dominance. Students faced harsh punishment for questioning these teachings or showing any sympathy towards non-magical people.
Working in tandem with her brother, who taught Defence Against the Dark Arts, Carrow helped transform Hogwarts from a place of learning into an institution of fear and indoctrination. The siblings enforced Voldemort’s new regime with brutal efficiency, using the Cruciatus Curse on students who disobeyed and encouraging others to inform on their classmates. Their reign of terror made the school nearly unrecognisable to those who had known it in peacetime.
Portrayed by Suzie Toase in the film adaptations, Carrow’s presence at Hogwarts demonstrated how quickly educational institutions could be corrupted by authoritarian forces. Her eventual defeat during the Battle of Hogwarts marked the end of one of the school’s most oppressive periods, allowing future generations to learn without fear of ideological persecution.
