Amycus Carrow stands as one of Voldemort’s most ruthless followers, a Death Eater whose cruelty became particularly evident during his brief tenure at Hogwarts. Born into the pure-blood Carrow family, he attended Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry where he was sorted into Slytherin House. His pallid complexion and menacing demeanour would later become synonymous with the dark period that befell the wizarding school.
Following Voldemort’s return to power, Carrow joined the Dark Lord’s inner circle alongside his equally vicious sister, Alecto. The siblings operated as a terrifying duo, carrying out the Death Eaters’ most brutal assignments without hesitation. When Voldemort gained control over the Ministry of Magic in 1997, Carrow received an appointment that would allow him to inflict maximum damage on the next generation of witches and wizards.
As Professor of Dark Arts at Hogwarts during the 1997-1998 academic year, Carrow transformed the Defence Against the Dark Arts curriculum into something far more sinister. Rather than teaching students to protect themselves from dark magic, he actively encouraged its use, forcing pupils to practise the Cruciatus Curse on fellow students as punishment. His reign of terror at the school, conducted alongside his sister who taught Muggle Studies, represented one of the darkest chapters in Hogwarts’ history.
Carrow’s time at Hogwarts ended during the Battle of Hogwarts, where he fought on Voldemort’s side against the defending forces. His survival of the conflict meant he likely faced justice through the wizarding courts for his crimes against both students and the wider magical community.
