Beru Lars

A moisture farmer’s wife living on the desert planet Tatooine, Beru Lars plays a crucial role in one of the galaxy’s most important stories. Married to Owen Lars, she helps raise Luke Skywalker from infancy after his father’s fall to the dark side and his mother’s tragic death during childbirth. The couple takes in the young Skywalker at the request of Obi-Wan Kenobi, who entrusts them with protecting the boy’s true identity whilst keeping him hidden from the Empire.

Living on their remote moisture farm, she provides Luke with the nurturing maternal figure he needs whilst maintaining the dangerous secret of his parentage. Her life revolves around the harsh realities of farming on Tatooine’s twin-sunned landscape, where water is precious and survival requires constant vigilance. Despite the isolation, she creates a stable home environment that allows Luke to grow up relatively normally, though she remains aware of the greater forces at play in his destiny.

The character appears in the prequel trilogy during the pivotal moments surrounding Luke’s adoption, and later features in the Disney+ series exploring Obi-Wan’s exile years on Tatooine. Her story meets its tragic end in 1 BBY when Imperial stormtroopers, searching for stolen Death Star plans, murder both her and Owen. Their deaths serve as the catalyst that finally pushes Luke to leave Tatooine and begin his journey as a Jedi, making their sacrifice instrumental in the Rebellion’s ultimate victory.
