Boss Nass

Boss Nass serves as the ruler of Otoh Gunga, the magnificent underwater city of the Gungans on Naboo. This amphibious leader sits atop the Gungan High Council, governing his people from beneath the planet’s serene lakes whilst the human inhabitants of Naboo occupy the surface above. His imposing stature and booming voice command respect amongst the Gungan population, though his initial distrust of outsiders reflects the deep-seated tensions between his aquatic civilisation and the surface dwellers.

When Queen Amidala and her Jedi protectors sought refuge in Gungan territory during the Trade Federation’s blockade of Naboo, Boss Nass initially proved reluctant to involve his people in what he perceived as surface politics. His scepticism dissolved only when Amidala herself humbly requested assistance, acknowledging past mistakes and appealing to their shared love of Naboo. This pivotal moment marked a turning point in Gungan-human relations on the planet.

The Gungan leader ultimately authorised his people’s participation in the Battle of Naboo, providing crucial military support that helped defeat the Trade Federation’s droid army. His warriors’ sacrifice and strategic importance in the conflict earned newfound respect from the human population. Brian Blessed’s distinctive vocal performance brings gravitas and authority to the character, particularly during the climactic celebration where Boss Nass declares lasting peace between the two peoples of Naboo.
