Igor Karkaroff serves as the calculating Headmaster of Durmstrang Institute, one of Europe’s most prestigious wizarding schools. This tall, gaunt wizard carries himself with an air of nervous authority, his once-black hair having turned completely white and his sharp blue eyes constantly darting about as though searching for threats. During the Triwizard Tournament at Hogwarts, he demonstrates fierce loyalty to his student Viktor Krum whilst maintaining a barely concealed tension around certain members of the British wizarding community.
Beneath his academic facade lies a dark history as a former Death Eater who served Lord Voldemort during the First Wizarding War. When captured by Aurors, Karkaroff chose self-preservation over loyalty, providing the Ministry of Magic with names of fellow Death Eaters in exchange for his freedom. This betrayal secured his release from Azkaban but marked him as a target for revenge amongst Voldemort’s remaining followers.
His worst fear—revealed to be Voldemort himself—proves prophetic when the Dark Lord’s return forces him into hiding. The burning of his Dark Mark serves as an ominous reminder that his past treachery has not been forgotten. Despite his attempts to flee, Karkaroff meets his end in a remote shack in Northern England, discovered by the Order of the Phoenix as another casualty of Voldemort’s quest for vengeance.
Portrayed by Serbian actor Predrag Bjelac in the film adaptation, Karkaroff embodies the paranoid desperation of someone whose cowardly choices have finally caught up with him.
