Marvolo Gaunt represents the bitter end of one of wizarding Britain’s most ancient bloodlines, a man whose obsession with pure-blood supremacy ultimately destroyed his family. Born before 1890, he descended from both Salazar Slytherin and Cadmus Peverell, connections he wore like badges of honour whilst living in abject poverty at the family’s ramshackle cottage in Yorkshire. Despite possessing two of the most precious magical artefacts in existence—Slytherin’s locket and the Resurrection Stone set in a ring—he chose to flaunt these heirlooms rather than sell them to improve his family’s desperate circumstances.

His fanatical devotion to blood purity manifested in violent outbursts and cruel treatment of his children, Morfin and Merope. When his daughter dared to marry the Muggle Tom Riddle Senior, he disowned her entirely, considering her actions a betrayal of everything the Gaunt name represented. This rigid worldview extended to his interactions with the Ministry of Magic, leading to his imprisonment in Azkaban for attacking Ministry officials who investigated his family’s illegal use of magic against local Muggles.

Marvolo died between 1925 and 1928, never knowing that his disgraced daughter had given birth to a grandson who would become the most feared Dark wizard of the modern era. His legacy lived on through the Horcrux his grandson would later create from the Peverell ring, ensuring that fragments of the Gaunt family’s dark obsessions would endure long after their squalid bloodline had ended.
