This diminutive astromech droid stands barely a metre tall but possesses more courage and resourcefulness than most beings in the galaxy. Built on Naboo in 33 BBY, the blue and white cylindrical robot served as a starship mechanic and navigator, equipped with an array of tools hidden within rotating panels across its dome and body. What sets this particular unit apart from countless other droids is an unwiped memory spanning decades and a fierce loyalty that transcends its original programming.
The droid first gained prominence during the Trade Federation’s blockade of Naboo, where it successfully repaired Queen Amidala’s royal starship whilst under fire. This act of bravery marked the beginning of an extraordinary journey that would see the unit become instrumental in the fall of the Galactic Empire. Kenny Baker brought the character to life from inside the cramped shell, giving physical presence to what would become one of cinema’s most expressive non-speaking roles.
Throughout the Clone Wars and the subsequent rise of the Empire, the astromech witnessed pivotal moments in galactic history whilst serving various masters. Its photographic memory preserved crucial information about the Jedi and the rebellion, making it both invaluable and dangerous to those in power. The droid’s partnership with protocol droid C-3PO created one of the saga’s most enduring relationships, their contrasting personalities providing both comic relief and emotional depth.
Despite lacking the ability to speak Basic, the droid communicates through an extensive vocabulary of beeps, whistles, and electronic sounds that convey remarkable emotional range. Its appearances span the entire sequel trilogy and standalone films, cementing its status as the saga’s most consistent witness to galactic events.
