The younger son of the ancient Black family, Regulus attended Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry during the 1970s, where he was sorted into Slytherin House and served as Seeker on the Quidditch team. Born into one of wizarding Britain’s most prominent pure-blood families, he grew up immersed in the traditional values and expectations that defined the House of Black for generations. Unlike his rebellious older brother Sirius, who famously rejected the family’s pure-blood supremacist beliefs, Regulus initially embraced the path laid out for him by his parents, Orion and Walburga Black.
During his time at Hogwarts, Regulus became a Death Eater whilst still a student, joining Lord Voldemort’s ranks as the Dark Lord’s influence spread throughout the wizarding world. His decision reflected both his family’s political leanings and the peer pressure within Slytherin House during those turbulent years. However, this allegiance would prove more complex than it first appeared, as the young wizard began to question the true nature of Voldemort’s methods and goals.
The turning point came when Regulus discovered the existence of Horcruxes—dark magical objects containing fragments of Voldemort’s soul. Horrified by this violation of natural law and the suffering it caused, he made the extraordinary decision to betray his former master. In 1979, at the age of just eighteen, he attempted to destroy one of these Horcruxes, a locket hidden in a dangerous cave. Though he managed to steal the original locket and leave a fake in its place, the mission cost him his life, making him one of the first to actively oppose Voldemort from within his own ranks.
