Portrayed by Matthew Lewis
This Gryffindor student begins his Hogwarts journey as a forgetful, clumsy boy who struggles with magic and appears destined for mediocrity. Born to respected Aurors Frank and Alice Longbottom, he carries the weight of tragedy—his parents were tortured into insanity by Death Eaters when he was barely a year old, leaving him to be raised by his formidable grandmother Augusta.
Throughout his early school years, Neville displays a particular aptitude for Herbology whilst struggling with other subjects, often appearing nervous and accident-prone. His classmates frequently overlook him, and even professors seem to expect little from the anxious young wizard. However, beneath this uncertain exterior lies tremendous courage that emerges when his friends face danger, as demonstrated during the events at the Department of Mysteries and his participation in Dumbledore’s Army.
The transformation becomes most apparent during his seventh year, when he leads student resistance at Hogwarts under the Carrows’ brutal regime. No longer the frightened boy who arrived at school, he becomes a natural leader who inspires others to stand against oppression. His growth culminates in a pivotal moment during the Battle of Hogwarts, when he destroys a crucial Horcrux with Godric Gryffindor’s sword, proving himself a true hero.
Following the wizarding war, he pursues his passion for Herbology, eventually returning to Hogwarts as a professor. His journey from overlooked student to respected educator exemplifies how courage and determination can flourish even in the most unlikely circumstances.
