Candlelight: Disney Love Songs is coming to seven UK cities, from £15.50

Disney Concerts and Fever are running a new Candlelight series through the autumn, built entirely around Disney and Pixar love songs. A string quartet plays the arrangements, the room is lit by candles, and the venues are mostly working cathedrals and halls rather than concert spaces.

Seven UK cities are on the schedule: London, Belfast, Glasgow, Birmingham, Cambridge, Liverpool and Manchester. Tickets start at £15.50 in Belfast and £19.50 in London, and the run goes from late August through to mid-November.

It’s a string quartet with no vocalists, so these are instrumental arrangements rather than the versions from the films. That matters more for some songs than others. “When She Loved Me”, “Dos Oruguitas” and “Breaking Free” do most of their work through the words, and on strings alone they become something else. “I See the Light” and “Beauty and the Beast” have melodies strong enough to carry on their own. “Married Life” from Up was written as an instrumental in the first place, so it arrives exactly as Michael Giacchino intended.

Five things worth knowing before you book

It’s about an hour. Candlelight concerts run 60 to 65 minutes depending on the programme, with no interval. Plan the evening around that rather than expecting a full night out.

The candles are flameless. Candlelight uses LED throughout, which is a fire safety requirement in packed historic buildings. The effect in the room still works, but if you were picturing a few thousand real wicks, that isn’t what this is.

Seating is zoned, then first come first served. You pick a zone when you book, and within that zone it’s whoever arrives first. Doors open 45 minutes before the start time.

Minimum age is eight. Anyone between 8 and 16 needs an adult with them. It’s marketed on Disney songs, so it’s worth flagging that this isn’t set up for younger children.

These are old buildings. Southwark Cathedral, Belfast Cathedral, Manchester Cathedral and St Paul’s in Birmingham are all working churches rather than purpose-built venues. Seating comfort and temperature vary accordingly. Take a layer.

What we’ll be listening for on 24 October

Candlelight has become a fixture over the last few years because the format is a good one. An hour, a small ensemble, and a room that does half the job before anyone plays a note. The Disney programme is a strong fit, because these are melodies written to carry a lot of feeling on their own.

Southwark should suit it particularly well. It’s a big stone space with a long, generous reverb, which is exactly what strings want, and there’s something about a quartet playing “Beauty and the Beast” under a Gothic ceiling that a concert hall can’t offer.

The part we’re most curious about is the arrangements. Most of the audience will know these songs with the words attached, so hearing what four players do with “Remember Me” or “Dos Oruguitas” is its own reason to go.
