Marietta Edgecombe attended Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry as a Ravenclaw student, beginning her magical education in 1990. Born to Mr Edgecombe and his wife, who worked for the Ministry of Magic’s Department of Magical Accidents and Catastrophes, she grew up in a household where loyalty to the Ministry ran deep. Her reddish-blonde hair and nervous disposition made her easily recognisable amongst her peers, though she often remained in the shadow of her more confident friend, Cho Chang.
During her fifth year, Marietta reluctantly joined Dumbledore’s Army at Cho’s insistence, despite her obvious discomfort with the secret organisation. Her mother’s position at the Ministry created a conflict of interest, as the government had banned all student groups and actively sought to discredit Albus Dumbledore. The pressure of keeping secrets whilst maintaining family loyalty proved too much for the anxious Ravenclaw.
In spring 1996, Marietta made the fateful decision to inform Professor Umbridge about Dumbledore’s Army meetings. However, her betrayal backfired spectacularly when Hermione Granger’s protective jinx activated, causing the word “SNEAK” to appear across her face in purple pustules. The disfiguring hex served as both punishment and warning to other potential informants.
Following Voldemort’s defeat, Marietta completed her education at Hogwarts, though the social consequences of her actions during the Ministry’s occupation of the school followed her throughout her remaining years. Her story serves as a cautionary tale about the dangers of divided loyalties during times of political upheaval.
