A moisture farmer’s son from the desert planet Tatooine, this Force-sensitive human transformed from restless farmhand to galactic saviour over the course of the original Star Wars trilogy. Mark Hamill brought youthful determination and growing wisdom to the role, portraying a character whose journey from wide-eyed teenager to confident Jedi Knight anchored the rebellion’s fight against the Empire. Born in 19 BBY and raised by his aunt and uncle, he remained unaware of his true parentage until fateful encounters with Obi-Wan Kenobi revealed his father’s identity as the fallen Jedi Anakin Skywalker.
The character’s path intertwined tragedy with triumph as he lost his right hand during a lightsaber duel with Darth Vader, requiring a prosthetic replacement, whilst simultaneously learning that his greatest enemy was also his father. Under the tutelage of both Kenobi and the ancient Jedi Master Yoda, he developed his Force abilities and lightsaber skills, ultimately playing a crucial role in the Emperor’s defeat and his father’s redemption at the Battle of Endor.
Following the Empire’s fall, he established a new Jedi training temple and took on multiple apprentices, including his sister Leia Organa and his nephew Ben Solo. However, his academy fell to the dark side’s influence when Ben became Kylo Ren, leading to years of self-imposed exile. The character’s later appearances in sequel films and series like The Mandalorian showcase him as a seasoned master, training promising students such as Grogu whilst grappling with the weight of past failures and the ongoing responsibility of preserving Jedi knowledge for future generations.
