Portrayed by Ray Park
This red and black-tattooed Zabrak warrior serves as one of the Sith’s most physically imposing enforcers, wielding a distinctive double-bladed lightsaber that sets him apart from traditional Force users. Born on the witch-planet Dathomir in 54 BBY, he was taken as a child by Darth Sidious and moulded into a weapon of vengeance against the Jedi Order. His horned appearance and aggressive fighting style made him a formidable opponent during the Clone Wars era.
The character first appeared in The Phantom Menace, where his fatal lightsaber duel with Qui-Gon Jinn and Obi-Wan Kenobi seemingly ended with him being bisected and falling down a reactor shaft. However, animated series later revealed his survival through sheer hatred and the dark side of the Force, though he required cybernetic legs to replace what he’d lost. This resurrection allowed him to pursue a complex revenge plot against both Jedi and Sith.
Beyond his Sith training, he eventually broke free from Sidious’s control and established his own criminal empire. He recruited his brother Savage Opress as an apprentice and later became involved with various underworld organisations including Death Watch and Crimson Dawn. His appearances in The Clone Wars and Rebels television series expanded his role significantly, showing his evolution from mere assassin to crime lord.
Ray Park’s athletic performance brought the character’s acrobatic combat style to life in live-action films, whilst voice actors Sam Witwer and Peter Serafinowicz provided his dialogue across different media. His journey from disposable villain to complex anti-hero demonstrates how animated series can rehabilitate and deepen seemingly one-dimensional characters.
