22 April 1998, chosen because it was Earth Day. It was the fourth theme park built at Walt Disney World and the only one designed around a working zoological operation, accredited and staffed by animal care teams rather than themed to look like one.

Animal Kingdom usually opens at 8am park time, earlier than the other three, and typically closes earlier too, often well before dark. Kilimanjaro Safaris is a different ride every time you take it, the walking trails reward the time almost nobody gives them, and Conservation Station asks for a train journey before you have seen anything at all. What forces the compromise is the early closing time, not a shortage of things to do. It also has more coming than any other park at Walt Disney World, with Tropical Americas arriving in 2027, so the case for giving it a full day is getting stronger rather than weaker.

No. The question comes up because DinoLand U.S.A. closed in February 2026 to make way for a new land called Tropical Americas, which Disney has confirmed for 2027. The park itself is not closing and the rest of it is operating normally, including Pandora, Africa, Asia and Discovery Island.

It is the largest Disney theme park in the world by area, at roughly 580 acres, which is around five times the size of Magic Kingdom. Most of that acreage is not walkable public space: a 110-acre savannah reserve sits behind Kilimanjaro Safaris, and large parts of the park are animal habitat and back-of-house animal care rather than paths and queues.

The savannah on Kilimanjaro Safaris holds elephants, giraffes, rhinos, lions and hippos among others, the Maharajah Jungle Trek in Asia has tigers, Komodo dragons and a large walkthrough aviary, and Gorilla Falls in Africa runs a gorilla troop alongside hippos and meerkats. Sightings are not scripted, so two trips round the safari on the same day give you two different experiences.

Five headline rides, several walking trails, and a set of shows that carry more of the park than they do elsewhere on property. The rides are Avatar Flight of Passage and Na’vi River Journey in Pandora, Expedition Everest and Kali River Rapids in Asia, and Kilimanjaro Safaris in Africa. Around them sit the animal trails, Festival of the Lion King in the Harambe Theatre, Zootopia: Better Zoogether! inside the Tree of Life, and Conservation Station, reached by train from behind Harambe Market.

Longer than its reputation suggests, and the early closing time is what catches people out. The rides can be done in half a day with good Lightning Lane timing, but the trails, the shows and Conservation Station are most of what makes the park different, and they are the first things dropped when the day is planned around headliners.
